To me the versatility of the Mac 26 overrode the need to conform to norm. I am one of those 26 owners mentioned in the article and I appreciate the open minded view of the writer. More than a few owners have gotten the sailing bug because they could afford it and then moved towards boats that were designed expressly for sailing. Like them or not, one thing that is indisputable about the MacGregor 26 M is they have brought many non-sailors into the sailing universe. The scoffers believe there is no price point that will ever tempt them into stepping foot on a MacGregor The boat, for some, represents a cheapening of the sport - a stripping away of the elegance and dignity that sailing withholds, leaving us with a mutant powerboat that wants to call itself a sailboat when the mood strikes. This is another area where new MacGregor boat owners rejoice and critics scoff. They just dropped the main and took off to beat the rain and get home for dinner. Some MacGregors have engines as large as HPs and can top knots. They assumed these people would probably not embrace the low speeds associated with traditional sailing - might be a deal breaker, so they slapped a big fat outboard on the transom and that problem was solved! What is the issue? The MacGregor was designed and marketed to non-sailors or would-be sort of sailors. What do you mean? None of this makes immediate sense, but the mention of a MacGregor 26M makes eyes roll… in slow motion… all the way around. It is also a bargain, meaning so many are made that economy of scale makes them less expensive though it must be pointed out that they are cheaply made also, and not built to do much serious sailing.Oh, except for one boat - the MacGregor 26M. If that is how you approach sailing, then a McGregor is the perfect boat. It is a different way of looking at the boat, as if it were a car or a television set, as in, 'We own a mcgregor! It comprises a group of people who prefer to sail in fair weather, rarely going out of sight of land, who don't really feel commited to the idea of sailing, and often people who think about things as 'products' that are 'manufactured' by a 'corporation' as the epitomy of legitimacy and reliability. It is considered a niche market, and it is. If most all the owners are neophytes, and no seasoned sailors are trying to design big outboards into their boats, then the marketing is geared towards ignorence and not wisdom. The question to ask a McGregor owner is not 'how do you like your boat? The outboard is a marketing idea. People call them a reall sailboat?įrostyJul 1, I think the McGregor is extremely ugly. Hull integrity, sail condition, structural soundness, etc. Anything in particular I should be looking for in this boat besides the usual when inspecting it? Auxiliary outboard questions. The seller seems to think the sails are in good condition, which would be a nice bonus.

Any suggestions on how to tell which model it is? The boat has sails in storage, condition unknown until I get down there to check it out. My first questions is, how do I know what model 26 it is? I do know that it has a swing keel and an outboard mount on the port side of the transom. I figure this could get me started, allow me to fix her up a bit and then likely sell it and move on in a season or two.
